This past Saturday we headed to Marion, VA to spend the day at Hungry Mother State Park. If you are ever looking for a fun day trip, we recommend you give the park a try.
It's roughly a 2 hour drive from Morristown, almost entirely on the interstate (although you can take several backroads, including Hwy 11, for a little more scenery.) Parking costs $2, and admission to the sand beach is $3 for kids and $4 for adults on weekends.
We spent the day on the sand beach. It is a VERY nice beach - extremely clean. The water is just right, not too warm and not too cold, and clear enough to see the bottom when the water is up to your chest. There is a diving platform with a low dive, and rarity of rarities nowadays - a high dive. We had a ton of fun just watching the kids trying to jump off the high dive for the first time!
There is a 5.7 mile hiking/biking trail around the lake which we plan on checking out in the fall - I imagine the foliage will be beautiful then.
